Oct. 25, 2022 – Literacy matters! Did you know that in Philadelphia 32% of third graders read on grade level, with stark gaps among racial groups, English language learners, and students with disabilities?
ASAP, wonderful non profit organization that has a mission to develop high quality after school activities and resources to empower youth and strengthen communities in Philadelphia, seeks to increase literacy and interest in reading through it’s Scrabble after school programs, tournaments, and Scrabble 101 day.
Scrabble is one of ASAP’s programs to strengthens the essential building blocks of literacy and mathematics for more than 1,100 students in 85 clubs. I was honored to join Scrabble 101. We spend half a day having fun with literacy and words: reading of “Let’s Make A Cake!” picture book, word games, giant Scrabble rug, and coloring pages.
Additionally Tree House Books, another wonderful Philly non profit, was there giving free books via through their book mobile.
This was a great day that shows that one can have fun AND learn at the same time 🙂
